Some memories of Peter Cloot

Peter Cloot died in November 2020.

Peter and his wife, Sheila, lived in Cuckoo Hill Road for over 50 years. During that time the family, including their four sons, were very involved with the tennis club. Both Peter and Sheila served the Club on the General Committee and Peter was also on the Management Committee for several years and became the President of the Club. Peter was Club Treasurer and was very influential in the reorganisation of the finances in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. With Peter and the Committee at the time, the Club developed sound financial planning enabling it to move forward with new courts and changes to the Clubhouse. It was important to modernise and remain popular with members as new large tennis centres with many facilities were being constructed in the area. Peter worked hard on behalf of the Club for over 25 years as a committee member.

Peter and Sheila supported the Club in both tennis events and social events. Peter loved quizzes and was the regular question master at Club Quizzes for several years. They were always difficult but great fun. Even after Peter and Sheila had stopped playing tennis they remained interested in the Club coming to the AGM and checking on progress.

Peter was a delightful person. He was always charming and with a great sense of humour. Peter loved sport; as well as tennis he enjoyed skiing every winter with one of his sons. Peter was keen on jazz and was involved with the annual jazz week at the Parish Church. He had had a varied career, for example working in banking and as a lecturer in computing at Imperial College. 

Peter will be missed by his many friends at the tennis club. The club, and today’s members, have much to thank him for.
